Once the Class Trials begin, you're not only tested on your detective skills, but you'll also rely on a keen sense of timing to be successful in the different mini-games and actually use your evidence. Your observational skills are put to the test as you seek out evidence and talk to fellow students to try to sort out the clues you'll need to discover the identity of the killers. Once you're able to look past the shock value and start digging into the actual game, the Danganronpa series is actually a deep and entertaining experience.
Don't let the game's anime art style fool you - this is most definitely not for kids. The scenes of torture, murder, and execution, coupled with the dialogue and plot of the game fall right into grindhouse territory in terms of shock value. The game's high school setting and the students' unique personalities hide the brutality of the actions taking place. And if that sounds weirdly twisted and macabre, you're on the right track. If you've never heard of Danganronpa before, the best way to describe the series is to imagine Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney meets Saw, by way of Saved by the Bell. Lots of people might say their high school years were murder, but for the students of Hope's Peak Academy, this is literally the case. While the content of these adventure/mystery games is grisly, the experience can be deep and engaging for mature players. At the end of the day, you can choose what's appropriate for your child, but if you're still feeling uneasy about Danganronpa, I highly recommend the Phoenix Wright series, as it contains similar visual novel/detective work mechanics and is much more tame than Danganronpa. Because of these reasons and more, not only do I not think these games are appropriate for kids, I also do not think they will get the maximum enjoyment out of them. This game has a lot of strong language and sexual innuendos, amongst all the violence and disturbing content. Blood is censored by the colour hot pink.
This game is mostly a visual novel, with elements of detective work and mini-games that promote critical thinking. The Danganronpa series, more or less, revolves around various classes of high-school students with extraordinary talents being thrown into a "killing game". Having played (and being a big fan of!) both the first and the second game included in this bundle, I am appalled at the vast amount of reviews saying these games are okay for children ages 10-12.
